Donald R. Smith

Donald Roland Smith, born in Chicago in 1933, died at home in Woodbridge, Virginia on December 21, 2022.

He was raised in Chicago by his parents Chester and Katherine Beale Smith. He has one sister, Rachella Smith Barrett, of Spring Grove, Illinois; two daughters, Andrea Smith of Long Beach, California, and Justine Smith Wilson of Norman, Oklahoma. His family includes: son-in-law Terri Wilson; grandsons Sunjay and Tsali, who reside in Long Beach, California, and Norman, Oklahoma, respectively, as well as nephew, Scott Barrett of Spring Grove, Illinois; and niece, Susan Barrett of Cody, Wyoming. Scott Barrett, wife, Amy, and children Ian, Brad and Rachel also loved Uncle Don.

Dr. Smith earned a BS in Physics at MIT in 1956 and a PhD in Physics at Indiana University in 1961. He worked as a civilian for the Navy at the White Oak Naval Surface Weapons Center at White Oak, Maryland from 1977 to 1981. He then was employed at the Naval Sea Systems Command in Crystal City, Virginia from 1981 until his retirement in 1995.

Donald was an avid tennis player, skier, and bridge player. He will be missed by his family and many friends who are invited to attend a reception in his honor on January 27 from 1 to 4pm to the Walker Chapel, 4102 North Glebe Road, Arlington, VA 22207.
